TPMS Over 10 Years of Great Service

Article written by Bush Tyres TPMS

TPMS And Its Importance

Made law back in November 2014, TPMS or as they are better known Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems became mandatory on all new cars. Whilst the system has many complicated layers and components the basic function of TPMS is to monitor in real time the air pressure within your vehicles tyres.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring sensors are an integral part of modern road safety. Sensors relay information to your cars onboard computer, ‘live’ and in real time. If the system detects any significant tyre pressure changes a warning light is displayed on your dashboard. We recommend that should this happens you reduce your speed immediately and find a safe place to pull over and check all your tyres for any damage or punctures.

Any sudden loss of pressure can be dangerous, especially at motorway speeds. As well as tyre pressures, you should visually check your tyres for any signs of wear or damage before every journey. This is especially important for motorway journeys and longer trips.

There are two main types of TPMS which are:

In-Direct

Direct

In-Direct TPMS do not use any physical pressure sensors instead they rely on software which measures the values from other sensors mounted to the vehicle. These sensors measure things such as wheel speeds, and driveline data to calculate the pressures in a tyre. First generation I-TPMS worked on the principle that an underinflated tyre would have a smaller diameter therefore a higher angular velocity.  The difference between an optimally pressured tyre and one which falls outside of its pre-programmed optimal angular velocity can then be determined by the software.

Most vehicles are fitted with Direct TPMS which uses physical sensors usually mounted within the value of the tyres to determine the tyre pressures and relay them to the driver. Whilst the information relayed could be argued to be more accurate the downside to a direct TPMS is that is uses a battery within the tyre valve stem to transmit data. This battery is not re-chargable and therefore must be replaced periodically.

TPMS at Bush Tyres

At Bush Tyres we offer a FREE inspection of your TPMS. This check includes all tyre pressures and the electronic system, including, where possible, the battery status of the sensors. After the pressures are set to manufacturer specification, your TPMS system is then reset. If any faults are present after this, we can replace TPMS valves where necessary.
