The AA called – Bush Tyres Rescued

Even the “4th emergency service” occasionally need help. Our Bush Tyres team based in Wakefield were able to help the UK’s oldest motoring association, The AA, supplying and fitting a pair of new front tyres.

The Automobile Association,

Founded in 1905 by a group of 90 motoring enthusiasts, the AA’s initial mission was ‘to help provide Moral support to the motorist’. This fast-changing world of motoring was growing with increasingly faster and louder cars appearing on the roads. This created a lot of upset for the traditional road users, eventually leading to new legislation.

The Motoring Act of 1903 was brought into effect in 1904 controlling the use of this new method of transportation. Drivers were introduced to new speed limits and fines, along with other ‘endorsements’ being introduced to your driving licence for the first time.

The AA was created to help motorists stay within these new laws and avoid penalties. Locations of ‘speed-traps’ and road safety signs were deployed to help motorists stay safe and avoid penalties. All road signs remained under the responsibility of the AA until eventually ownership was transferred to the control of local authorities in 1930.

The first breakdown service was later introduced in 1907 when AA patrolmen know as ‘Cycle Scouts’ used their cycles to patrol streets and assist broken down motorists, often carrying out on the spot repairs. By 1909 there was over 1000 scouts in standardised uniforms carrying out this service throughout the United Kingdom.

Fast forward to today and the AA is now a huge organisation employing nearly ten thousand people who provide a wide range of service to over 14 million members. Alongside the original breakdown cover, they now also provide finance and insurance for not only your car but also your house. They offer several Leisure and Lifestyle services as well as route planning and maps/guides.
