Announcement on tractor weights and speed

Article written by Bush Tyres

Following an initial statement last October, it has been announced today by Transport Minister, Claire Perry MP, that the regulations to increase the weight and speed limits of tractors and trailers on roads in Great Britain are being laid before Parliament today.
This means we have a date of 9 March 2015 when the new legislation will take effect. Existing limits will apply until then.
From 9 March 2015 an agricultural tractor towing an agricultural trailer will be able to travel at a higher combination weight limit of 31 tonnes (t), increasing from 24.39t. The existing trailer limit of 18.29t remains in place. Furthermore, agricultural tractors and agricultural trailers which are currently restricted under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended) to travelling at 20 miles per hour (mph) will be able to travel at 40 kilometres per hour (approximately 25mph).
The changes coming into force on 9 March 2015 will complete the first stage of changes.
The NAAC is meeting with the Department for Transport and other key stakeholders tomorrow to kick off further consultation on further increases to speed and weight limits, including to the 18.29t trailer weight limit to bring further benefits to the industry alongside a roadworthiness test for harvest 2016.
