Article written by Bush Tyres

This modern classic, 1989 Renault 5 Automatic visited our Boston depot for a full set of iLink economy tyres. To find out more about this chic French designed car, read more in our latest blog below.

Is the classic Renault 5 coming back?

The original Renault 5 was first launched in 1972. Production ran all the way through to 1996 over 2 generations. This example is a later, second-generation car manufactured in 1989, fitted with a 1397cc 4-cylinder engine and a 3-speed automatic gearbox.

The more desirable 3 door hatchback always was the more stylish compared to the clunky design of the 5-door variant. This model was not the most powerful “5” ever made for performance.

The chic design of this French hatchback did however win over the hearts and wallets of many drivers at the time. It was a great compact city car with cheap running costs ideal for town driving.

This image didn’t stop the engineering department making some incredible performance variants for motorsport. The most famous example being the infamous “GT turbo.” In 1989, the same year our featured car was registered, Alain Oreille and Gilles Thimonier won the Ivory Coast Rally in Africa. This victory remains the only overall victory for a Group N car in WRC.

With all the history and nostalgia surrounding the Renault 5, it’s no wonder Renault are planning a relaunch of their most famous hatchback.

The nameplate has been selected to launch an all-new Electric powered hatchback. Inspired by the classic design, but now with all the benefits of being a modern Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV). Being hailed by Renault as the “Rebirth of an icon”, we should see this new model for ourselves from the summer of 2024. If the car can live up to the reputation of its namesake and provide the same levels of economy and joy, Renault could very well have a new icon on their hands.
