2022 Toyota GR Supra A90 MK5 Wheel Swap

Article written by Bush Tyres

Gavin from YouTube channel ZEROYON visited our Beverley Branch recently with his stunning Mk5 2022 A90 Supra GR.

He called in following his previous visit for a custom setup wheel alignment. This time around the team swapped over his tyres onto the newer and lighter MY23 wheels.

2022 GR Supra MK5

Since the A90 Supra was launched at the Detroit Auto Show in 2019 the new design has split opinion. Crating a divide between traditional Supra fans and this next generation of owners. This all-new car, a joint project by Toyota and BMW, sees a unique Toyota designed body placed onto an existing BMW engine and chassis. A clever way for Toyota to release a new and updated classic, or did they lose the spirit of the original and iconic Supra in the process? Owners seem to love them and tell us the cars do have their own ‘soul’ over the more subtly designed BMW model they are based on.

Powered by BMW’s 3.0 twin turbo In-Line 6 cylinder engine, producing at least 335hp power. All the power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight speed ZF transmission. Performance results in a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. This stands the Supra in good company, with cars like the BMW M2 Competition and Porsche Cayman GTS.

The Supra shares this engine and gearbox with the BMW Z4. Other than that, it does somehow manage to have a personality all its own. The good bits it has borrowed from its German cousin show up in all the right places; infotainment, safety, emission systems, and the overall interior build quality is excellent. This platform giving Toyota a solid place to start from, seems to have left their engineers to focus attention on the overall design and feel of the car. The Supra is also a rare sight on the road, making it feel more exclusive and special overall.

Wheel and Tyre Swap Overs

Gavin supplied us his own wheels for this job, black 10-Spoke 19" wheels from the newer 2023 model. The Beverley team swapped his existing tyres over from the two-tone black/chrome 2022-wheels over to the new ones. They used the latest tyre fitting equipment and took upmost care to ensure a perfect fit and zero damage. Wheels were then balanced and re-fitted to the car and secured to factory torque settings. These wheels not only transform the look of the car, but they are also nearly 2Kg lighter, reducing un-sprung weight on the car, making it feel lighter and improving the overall handling. Something that could be felt through the steering immediately on collection. As you will see in the video, Gavin is planning to upgrade the wheels again soon. Some custom forged alloys are in the pipeline for him, so keep an eye out on his channel and these pages for updates on that. We look forward to seeing him and his Supra again soon.

Both of Gavin’s visits can be seen on his YouTube channel.
